Attention LHS Sophomores & Juniors!

The Dedman Distinguished Scholars Program at The University of Texas at Austin is excited to share their fifth annual Dedman Essay Competition for 2022. They are offering 5 scholarships to high school sophomores and juniors in the amount of $1,500, $1,000, $500, and two $250 awards. The scholarship has no prerequisites regarding ethnicity, economic background, or extracurricular activities & there is no fee to participate. The contest requires applicants to submit a 750-800 word essay at our website dedmanessay.com on the following prompt:

Tell us about a time you expressed compassion to someone or something you currently or used to dislike. What did that compassion look like? Explore why you were compassionate, how it affected you and the people/things involved, and what you learned from the experience.

Additionally, this year they will host two writing workshops to help students write and revise their essays before submission. These workshops will be held over Zoom. Students must register for the workshops beforehand in order to attend. Further details and suggestions about crafting a competitive essay can be found at dedmanessay.com.

The competition opens on April 1, and the deadline for submission is April 30 at 11:59 PM.
