Students Qualify for All-State Band & Choir

Each fall, over 70,000 Texas high school students begin the All-State audition process, and 1810 are ultimately selected to rehearse and perform during the annual TMEA Clinic/Convention in one of 18 Texas All-State ensembles. Congratulations to Christian Corley, Levelland HS senior, for earning 5th chair Bass 2 in the Large School All-State Tenor/Bass Choir and Lizzie Corley, sophomore, 1st chair Alto in the Small School All-State Mixed Choir. Christian and Lizzie are private voice students with Jan Sisson Nugent.  Deborah Payne is the Levelland High School Choir Director.  Christian was in the SSC All-State Mixed Choir in 2019 his sophomore year.  This will be Lizzie’s second year in the SSC All-State Mixed Choir. In August 2020, the Texas Music Educators Association Executive Board announced the shift to a virtual convention February 10-13. They declared their commitment to ensuring the path to All-State would remain a meaningful journey for all involved. They are still actively investigating an opportunity to host in-person rehearsals and performances for the 18 all-State ensembles.

In a virtual All-State Band audition that was judged on January 17, Spencer Owens earned First Chair in Area West All-State Band auditions. His placement earns him membership in The Texas All-State Band for the 4th Year. Mr. Will Burks, Director of Bands for Levelland ISD, said "Spencer is a remarkable young musician. His dedication to his craft sets him apart from the majority of High School Students. I couldn't be more proud of his accomplishment." Fourth-year All-Staters are awarded a $2000 scholarship by The Association of Texas Small School Bands. The All-State Band will perform in June 2021. Congratulations to these outstanding music leaders!
