On Saturday February 27th, thirty-one members of the LHS Lobo Band earned forty-one medals for their participation in UIL Solo and Ensemble Competition. The competition was hosted by Mr. Will Burks and Mr. John Barry, Band Directors at Levelland High School. The students were adjudicated by retired Band Director and Master Teacher, Greg Miller. In a break from long-standing tradition, the judge came to Levelland High School rather than our students traveling to a central location. The Band Directors in UIL Region 16 were in agreement that a traveling judge format was safer for all involved given the restraints of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr. Burks commented that many things have been altered to maintain student safety during the pandemic, but because of the atmosphere of a smaller contest, directors from schools of all sizes tend to be in favor of continuing to hold this competition using a traveling judge format. Two soloists, Eduardo Melendez on Euphonium and Spencer Owens on Trombone along with a Flute Choir that included Jasmin Jasso, Cecilia Berumen, Samantha Valdez, Isabelle Romero, Kaydence Escarcega, and Makaia Gay qualified for the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Competition which will be held in a virtual format in late May. Congratulations to these band members for their dedication to music!
