Cesar Chavez Day

LHS students in Mrs. Pricella Garza's Cultural Linguistics Classes have been studying Cesar Chavez this month in honor of Cesar Chavez Day today, his birthday!  Students learned that Cesar was born on March 31, 1927 and had a hard life growing up because he was poor and moved around numerous times as a migrant farmworker.  However, Cesar joined the Navy when he was nineteen and later started fighting for Latino Civil Rights, helping register voters.  His legacy stands today as fighting for the rights and working conditions of migrant farmworkers.  Mr. Chavez died in his sleep on April 23, 1993, and over 50,000 people attended his funeral. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom after his death.  Thank you, Mrs. Garza, for making your students aware of American culture that affects their lives today!
