Holes!

Mrs. Oliver's LHS students have been studying the book Holes by Louis Sachar, including characters, conflict, plot, and theme. In this smart jigsaw puzzle of a novel, Stanley is unjustly sent to a boys’ detention center, Camp Green Lake, where boys build character by spending all day digging holes exactly five feet wide and five feet deep every day. There is no lake at Camp Green Lake, but there are an awful lot of holes. To make the book come to life, Mrs. Oliver's students and special guest LHS teacher Mr. Jefferson Marshall all experienced a Field Trip to her farm, where students found a huge hole as well. Students reviewed compass directions and were challenged on a scavenger hunt to find various items around the hole like: rattlesnake venom nail polish, bones, hammocks, letters sent from home, buffalo food, onions, and twigs for the campfire. Students also enjoyed cooking hotdogs and smores. They ended the day with a hole digging contest and realized like in the book, that their friends are valuable! Thank you, Mrs. Oliver, for giving your students the "whole" experience on the book, Holes!
